Velvetleaf
is native to China and was introduced to North America before 1700
for fiber production. It
was cultivated as a crop for over 100 years but it never became
an economic success.
Velvetleaf was widely distributed on the East Coast by the early
1700's. It now occurs across most of the United States and is beginning
to spread into eastern Canada. It is also common in Europe.
