mosquitofish successfully controls mosquito populations, especially
in highly altered water systems such as those associated with rice paddies.
However, the mosquitofish has also been found to have significant ecological
effects because it is such a generalist feeder. Mosquitofish will eat
insects and their larvae, as well as fish eggs, fry, and even amphibian
eggs and their young. Around the world, mosquitofish have now themselves
become targets of biological control!
