Norway
rats first arrived on North Americas eastern shore aboard
merchant and military ships around 1776 as stowaways in grain transported
with
Hessian soldiers.
Norway rats are found both near human habitations and in
agricultural fields. The rats are highly adaptable inhabiting forests,
deserts, and grasslands.
Norway rats
burrow to make nests under buildings and other structures and although
they can climb, Norway rats tend to inhabit the lower floors of
buildings.
