Aesthetics is a branch of philosophy concerned with beauty, art, and taste.  But, as we know, “beauty is often in the eye of the beholder”. Thus, aesthetic arguments often enter a discussion about exotic species since many invasive exotic species such as purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) are considered beautiful and some of our worst weeds including musk thistle (Carduus nutans) were introduced because of aesthetics.

Colorful weeds improve the aesthetics of the area.

Aesthetics may not be an important factor in protecting the environment, however, it is often a major factor in the perceptions formed by the general public, tour groups, and others. Improvement of yards and parks by the addition of plantings supports a multibillion-dollar per year horticulture industry.  Anything that improves the aesthetics f the natural landscape by adding color, pleasant smells, shade, etc. should be kept, even if it is a weed. If one agrees with this argument, weeds that are attractive, such as escaped ornamentals, should be left alone. Unfortunately, one person's weed is another's wild flower!

Weeds reduce the aesthetics of the area.

Although some exotic weeds have beautiful flowers, the replacement of native species is not as desirable as native plants from an aesthetic point of view.  The replacement is gradual and to the general public the change from woodland flowers to garlic mustard and the change from prairie flowers to sweet clover and poison parsnip may not be noticed.  However many of these invasive species form monocultures which remove the visual appeal of diverse groups of flowering plants.  The slow replacement of native species with exotic species can occur with entire forests leading to the loss of fall colors and other aesthetically pleasing seasonal changes.  Finally, as the world’s species becomes more homogenous, the appeal of visiting new areas for the discovery of exotic and beautiful flowers, trees, and landscapes fades.
