Adults
average about 3/8 of an inch in length and about 1/4-inch in width.
The common name "multicolored Asian lady beetle" refers
to the fact that individuals are extremely variable in
appearance.
Since the elytra (modified forewings of beetles) can look similar
to those of several native species, perhaps the best identifying
feature is the thorax (body segment behind the head). The thorax
is mostly white with a large black marking that looks like an
"M". The larvae are difficult to tell from those of
most other ladybugs and are mostly black with orange spines on
their back.
When handled, adults secrete a foul smelling and slightly toxic
liquid from their legs. They are also capable of inflicting
a painful bite.
