We are under invasion by exotic species. These are species that enter or are brought into areas where they did not previously occur. Because global travel and commerce are increasing, the number of such and their potential impacts is also on the rise. The biology and ecology of exotics, and the roles they come to play in the areas where they have been introduced, is the subject of this web site. You will: 1) learn about ecological principles which affect the outcomes of species introductions. 2) explore how non-indigenous species get to new habitats, the benefits and costs of species introductions, and what you can do to stem the tide of unwelcome exotics. As scientists you will test hypotheses about what can make an exotic species successful in its new habitats. You can become an active participant in reducing the impact of an unwelcome exotic species. First you need to be able to recognize one and for practice you will investigate how to tell a native thistle from an exotic one. Test your knowledge of exotic species. The species quizzes provide in-depth information on selected species. The questions will test your knowledge and teach you at the same time.
